Meet the Team
Dr Patricia Hamilton
Director of Medical Education
Patricia is Director of Medical Education at the Department of
Health and co-Chair of the Medical Programme Board. She is
responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of many of
the medical educational projects referred to in A High Quality
Workforce and works closely with the newly formed Medical Education
England.
She is working at the Department of Health on secondment from
her post of Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Neonatal Paediatrics
at St George’s Hospital Medical School. She was previously a
Medical Director at St George’s Hospital.
Patricia was President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and
Child Health, having previously been Vice President for Training
and Assessment. She has chaired many college committees and working
parties including those developing the paediatric curriculum and
programmes. She was involved in developments in workplace-based
assessments. She was responsible for producing training packages in
child protection and child mental health.
As President, she was a member of the Academy of Medical Royal
Colleges and sat on several of its Education and Training
Committees. She was Chair of the steering group of the Medical
Leadership Competency Framework project completed by the Academy of
Medical Royal Colleges and the National Institute for Innovation
and Improvement. She is a board member of the Postgraduate Medical
Education and Training Board, and was co-Chair of the London
Children’s Clinical Pathways group, and a member of the leadership
group of Lord Darzi’s Next Stage Review.
Dr. Mary Armitage
Deputy Director of Medical Education
Mary's role with the Modernising Medical Careers programme is to
provide professional clinical advice and promote and increase
clinical engagement with all levels of the profession – trainees,
management, consultants and non-consultant career grades. This role
also extends to the professional bodies, particularly the Royal
Colleges, Faculties, specialist societies and Deaneries.
Mary is a consultant physician and specialist
endocrinologist at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. She has a
longstanding interest in Medical Management, was Clinical Director
of Medicine for 9 years and is currently Medical Director of the
Foundation Trust. She has specific interests in the delivery of
acute medical services, the balance between general and specialist
services, workforce planning and the need to align service and
training.
She has had a significant role within the
Royal College of Physicians over many years: elected Council
Member, Regional Advisor in Wessex, Chairman General (Internal)
Medicine Committee and Clinical Vice President from August 2004 to
July 2007, leading the clinical standards department at the
RCP.
Mary was Head of the Postgraduate School of Medicine in Wessex
Deanery between 2007 and September 2009, responsible for the
delivery and quality assurance of Core Medical training and
training in the Medical Specialties.
Dr. Alison Carr
Dean Adviser
Alison graduated in Medicine from Barts in
London in 1985. She trained in Anaesthesia and became a Consultant
Anaesthetist with an interest in Paediatrics in Plymouth in 1997.
Alison was College Tutor and Education Director for the South West
School of Anaesthesia. After working in the Peninsula College of
Medicine and Dentistry as Director of Phase 2/Year 5 Curriculum
from 2002, she became Deputy Postgraduate Dean of the South West
Peninsula Deanery in 2005. Alison continues to work as a
Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist at Derriford Hospital,
Plymouth.
Dr Simon Plint
Clinical Adviser
Simon is Postgraduate Medical
Commissioning Dean for NHS South Central (formally GP Dean),
and a Deputy Chairman of COGPED. Previously, he led the development
of the national recruitment process for General Practice.
Currently, he leads on the proposed extension of GP training
project, expansion of GP training numbers and the Role of the
Doctor for the MMC team.
