The Role of the Doctor
Item published 19 December 2008
The Medical Schools Council issued a press release this week
(Tuesday 16 December 2008) confirming that the medical
profession has reached a consensus on the role of the doctor.
The consensus statement reveals a set of abiding attributes that
are required by doctors and also anticipates that the role of the
doctor will develop to fit the changing needs of society.
The statement was produced by a steering committee
following the outcome of a conference in October 2008 at The Royal
Society, London. The steering committee included
representatives from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges,
the Association of UK University Hospitals, the British Medical
Association, the Departments of Health, the General Medical
Council, The King’s Fund, the Medical Schools Council, NHS
Employers and PMETB.
