When to Apply

Specialty recruitment has two main rounds of recruitment to fill training posts for the start of training programmes on 3 August 2011.

Round 1, the main recruitment round, invites applications to all ST1 and CT1 posts and some deaneries may include CT2/CT3 level vacancies.  Some run-through specialties, such as Paediatrics and Child Health and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, also recruit to higher levels during Round 1.

Round 1 specialty recruitment starts on 3 December 2010.  Many specialties invite you to register as an applicant on their online application system before the application opening date.  You should check the relevant website for the specialty to which you are applying.

The deadline for applications is 20 December 2010 at 12 noon.  All first offers in Round 1 will be issued by 11 March 2011.

Round 2 is for any vacancies that remain following Round 1 and some CT2, CT3, ST3 and ST4 posts that are being advertised for the first time.

Round 2 specialty recruitment starts on 7 February 2011, but specific opening and closing dates may vary between specialties.  Recruitment to fill vacancies will continue to the end of December 2011.

Each recruiting office must publish in advance on their website, the timetable they are working to, including when applications open and close and interview dates, so that you can plan your applications.  Please check deanery and college websites for specialty application closing dates as these may vary.

About the different rounds of recruitment to specialty training

The first and main recruitment round for specialty training programmes in 2011 starts on 3 December 2010 for CT1/ST1 programmes and other training levels in some specialties that are using a nationally coordinated recruitment process.

A second round of recruitment will run from 7 February 2011, including all posts that remain unfilled from Round 1, together with any posts being advertised for the first time at CT2/ST2, CT3 and ST3 levels.  Round 2 interviews will be held from April 2011.

If you have been unsuccesful in the first round of recruitment to specialty training, the second round gives you another opportunity to secure a training place with an August 2011 start date, where possible.

Applicants who are still waiting for offers following interviews in the first round of recruitment, shouldn’t be alarmed to see the same specialties advertised in the second round. No Round 2 offers will be made until the first round has closed. Deaneries are advertising based on the knowledge that there will still be opportunities available. This does not in any way disadvantage your application in the first round of recruitment.

Please note, if you have accepted a Round 1 post and decide to apply again in Round 2, you will need to give the required period of notice before you can take up the new post.
